The PCs say the provincial government does not have a grip on the MOU on the expansion of hydro development in Labrador when it comes to local benefits.

Skilled Trades NL says at least 86 per cent of the jobs on any major hydro projects in the province should go to workers from this province.

Lloyd Parrott, the energy critic, says the MOU between Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec singles out only Gull Island as a project to favour the hiring of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The twinning of Churchill Falls and the expansion of transmission capacity to Quebec does not guarantee local preference hiring.

Parrott says we have billions of dollars of work in the offing including Bay d’Espoir and Holyrood, and we don’t know if Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will even be a priority.
