The Michigan City Common Council is urging the state to stick to the original timeline for turning over the Indiana State Prison for redevelopment, calling the delay disheartening.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday to ask the state to honor its original plans to close the Civil War-era, partly maximum security prison in 2026 and turn it over to the city for redevelopment in 2029. The Indiana Department of Correction is building a new $1.2 billion Westville Correctional Facility that can hold up to 4,200 prisoners and is intended to replace both the current Westville and Michigan City prisons.
