WEST POINT – The West Point Association of Graduates (WPAOG) has canceled an award ceremony intended to honor Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks later this month.

Hanks was scheduled to be honored at the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point on Sept. 25 with the Sylvanus Thayer Award, dedicated to recognizing an “outstanding citizen” who did not attend West Point, but still exemplifies the academy’s ideals of “Duty, Honor, Country.”

There has been speculation that Hanks was “Cast Away” due to influence from President Donald Trump. Hanks is an outspoken supporter of Democrats and was a headliner at a campaign fundraiser for Joe Biden in 2020. Biden went on to defeat Trump in the election.
