WEATHER played havoc with the NFL's first Sunday slate of the season.

A game was suspended after less than an hour on field due to lightning.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers were called off the field shortly before 2 pm local time.

The Jags were leading 10-3 at the time when play was stopped at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.

There was 8:32 to play in the first half when the suspension was made.

A message was displayed on the big screen, urging fans to seek shelter.

It read, "Weather alert: Due to severe weather in the area please move from open areas to protected areas.

"Please follow directions of stadium staff.

"We will announce when it is safe for you to return to your seats.

"Thank you for your cooperation."
