The U.S. may have to refund half the tariffs it’s collected so far if the Supreme Court rules they’re illegal, an official said over the weekend.

Tens of billions of dollars are at risk, according to Politico .

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent spoke about the possibility of tariff refunds Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“We would have to give a refund on about half the tariffs, which would be terrible for the Treasury,” Bessent said, according to Politico. “If the court says it, we’d have to do it.”

Bessent also said he was confident the administration of President Donald Trump would prevail in court.
