Rick Davies — the founder, lead singer and songwriter for the famous progressive rock band Supertramp — has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 81 years old.

Davies died on Saturday, Sept. 6 after battling Multiple Myeloma — a type of cancer that forms in the plasma cells — for more than 10 years, according to a statement on Supertramp’s website .

“As co-writer, along with partner Roger Hodgson, he was the voice and pianist behind Supertramp’s most iconic songs, leaving an indelible mark on rock music history,” the statement read. “His soulful vocals and unmistakable touch on the Wurlitzer became the heartbeat of the bands’ sound.”
