YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) - Police say technology and teamwork are responsible for one of the biggest reductions in violent crime in Youngstown in recent history.

Lt. Mohammad Awad of the Detective Bureau said that from Sept 1, 2024 to Aug. 31 of this year, the city has seen 11 homicides -- the lowest, one-year rolling total of homicides since 1967.

For the 2025 calendar year, the city has had nine homicides. At this time last year, Youngstown had 16 homicides and 22 overall in 2024.

Also down is the number of people who have been shot. So far for 2025, the city has seen 34 shootings, down from 60 at this point in 2024. Overall in 2024, the city saw 80 people shot.
