RIVERTON, Neb. (KOLN) - For the last week, volunteers have been driving from the south central Nebraska town of Franklin to fill up Riverton’s water for washing purposes.

“I’ve taken one shower,” Cody, a Riverton resident said. “That’s all I need.”

However, without drinking water, more than 50 people are still thirsty.

“Don’t know what you have until it’s gone. It’s a shock when you wake up one morning and there ain’t nothing,” Debra Lucht, the city clerk said.

Arsenic and debris shut down two of Riverton’s wells before. Then on Labor Day, the village’s last well - built in 1977 - collapsed.

Franklin County authorities submitted a disaster declaration, the first step toward securing state aid from the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
