ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park has welcomed its first camel herd this summer, featuring three young Bactrian camels named Jasper, Opal, and Sardonyx.

The camels are between one and two years old and are settling into the WildCare Park, a safari park and conservation breeding center currently under development in north St. Louis County.

The Saint Louis Zoo says Bactrian camels are known for their ability to withstand extreme temperatures, ranging from -20°F to 120°F, in their native habitat, the Gobi Desert of Mongolia.

Bactrian camels are the only camel species that still roam in the wild, although wild herds are extremely rare since most are domesticated today. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet these camels on guided safaris when WildCare Park officially opens in 20
