(Gray News) - A fugitive father was killed by police after being accused of kidnapping his children.

According to New Zealand authorities, Thomas Callam Phillips had been on the run and living off the grid with his children, 12-year-old Jayda, 10-year-old Maverick and 9-year-old Ember, since 2021.

Phillips was shot and killed by police while authorities were responding to a break-in at a farm shop.

A police officer was wounded in the confrontation after being shot in the head at close range with a high-powered rifle, according to authorities.

One of the children was found with Phillips, and the other two were found later.

All three children are safe and uninjured, according to police.
