(WSPA) - The third case of measles has been confirmed in South Carolina this year, two more than in 2024.
State health officials confirmed the third case, involving an Upstate resident, is unrelated to the others.
“Not surprised, but a little disheartened that we're seeing another outbreak of measles," Dr. Stephen Jones, with Parkside Family Medicine and Pediatrics said.
Officials believe this case was brought into the U.S. from another country, though they aren’t offering anything more specific about the location.
State health officials said the Upstate resident diagnosed with measles is unvaccinated. They warned against skipping the vaccine, noting it’s over 97% effective at preventing respiratory complications that can lead to hospitalization or even death.
