The Tulsa Public Schools Board of Education approved a new policy Monday night prohibiting its schools from using branding imagery that incorporates racial, ethnic, gender-based, religious or cultural stereotypes.
Approved by a 6-1 vote, the policy also prohibits schools from changing their mascot to a person or incorporating human representation in their logos or branding elements in the future.
“It isn’t the mascot that people should be cheering for but the students who are being overshadowed by it,” said Audrey Gray, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and a member of the Tulsa Native Youth Board, TPS’ inter-tribal organization for high school students.
