ANN ARBOR, MI — For hours late last week, Rodrigo Osorio wasn’t sure whether he would be gone from home a few days, weeks or months.
Taken by federal immigration agents after dropping off his son at school early Thursday, Sept. 4 , the 31-year-old said he saw the lights of a few vehicles about a block from Lakewood Elementary, initially pulling to the side to allow them to pass.
Instead, they stopped him.
What followed were about eight hours in custody with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a federal facility in Detroit before Osorio was ultimately released by late afternoon . By then, however, the Ann Arbor-area father said much of the damage had been done as concern erupted across the Lakewood parent community, prompting a response from Ann Arbor Public Schools.
