CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Video released Friday of a fatal stabbing on Charlotte’s Light Rail is sparking political outrage and new reaction from both federal and state leaders.

U.S. Rep. Tim Moore and Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles both argue the murder of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska could have been prevented. They argue the justice system failed.

“The senseless violence, just the evil of someone to do this, but it shows a system that is not working,” said Moore.

Moore told Queen City News the solution is not legislation, but a change to either how local courts operate or who is being elected and appointed as judges. Moore pointed specifically to suspect Decarlos Brown’s long rap sheet of violent felonies and mental health concerns.
