ONAWA, Iowa (KTIV) - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says efforts to remove dead or dying cottonwood trees from a state park near Onawa is causing them to close the campground until further notice.

The DNR announcing those tree removal efforts at Lewis and Clark State Park west of Onawa Monday afternoon.

They say the dead and dying trees pose a safety hazard.

The campground will remain closed until further notice. Campers with reservations were contacted by the DNR and given refunds.

The DNR says the park itself remains open for picnics and trail use but will close entirely once tree removal operations begin.
