LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - September is National Literacy Month, a time to highlight the importance of reading and writing in a content-driven world.

According to the National Literacy Institute, over 54% of adults have a literacy level below a sixth-grade level.

Here in Southwest Louisiana, the SWLA Literacy Council is working with SOWELA Technical Community College to help adults.

“The Literacy Council is a non-profit organization, and we provide adult literacy services. SOWELA is our community partner, and they give us an opportunity to host classes in the evening,” Tommeka Semien, SWLA Literacy Council Executive Director, said.

This partnership offers flexible programs to help meet individual needs.
