A two-year volunteer project to clean 1,371 gravestones at the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Veterans Memorial Cemetery concluded Monday evening with a ceremony celebrating the dedication of over 150 volunteers.

The restoration project involved professionally scrubbing and scraping the gravestones to restore them to a like-new condition. The process is the same exact one used in Arlington National Cemetery. Volunteers gathered at the cemetery to commemorate the completion of the project and to honor the veterans laid to rest there.

"Gathered volunteers were trained on how to clean each gravestone to ensure a consistent and respectful process" said Ken Vybiral, Volunteer Resources Coordinator. "We're going to celebrate them here tonight."
