JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (WGEM) - The Missouri Capitol heats up as lawmakers debate redistricting.
Monday, the Missouri House of Representatives discussed a plan to redraw the state’s congressional districts for the first time as a body. Debates heated up as lawmakers clashed over the map and a proposal to make it more difficult to amend the state’s constitution.
Initiative petition is the process that allows Missourians to amend their state’s constitution. Right now, questions put on the ballot by citizens only need a simple majority to pass. This proposal would make it so that they need a statewide majority and a majority in all eight congressional districts. The change gives rural districts more power.
