MACON, Ga. — Elaine Lucas, a fixture in Macon’s political and civic life for nearly four decades, is facing a new challenge: leukemia.

“I have known about a month,” Lucas said. “I was originally treated for breast cancer, and it was controlled, but I started to have low levels of white blood cells and red blood cells. That was a signal to my doctors that there was something else going on.”

She said she is now in an intense treatment program through Emory and a local cancer care center.

“Last week was my very first full week of treatment and I went every day. It involves injections and a number of pills,” Lucas said. “There is fatigue. That’s why people might not see me out as much.”

Even as treatment slows her pace, Lucas said she plans to keep advocating on issues facing Bibb Count
