Allen Blickle, the original drummer and co-founder of the popular sludge metal band Baroness, has died. He was 42.

Blickle’s death was shared by his former bandmate and Baroness frontman, John Baizley, on Instagram Monday, Sept. 8.

“It breaks my heart to have to share the news that my dear friend, creative partner and former bandmate Allen Blickle passed away a few days ago,” Baizley wrote. “I’m still in shock that he’s gone. We ask for understanding as his family and this band process his passing and grieve his loss. Allen, I love you and miss you. I treasure every moment we shared."

While a cause of death was not revealed, a post from Laura Pleasants of the band Kylesa suggested that Blickle had been fighting some kind of illness.
