COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office now says an organization it identified as an “online teen crime group” was the source of a recent swatting incident at the University of South Carolina.

In a statement on Tuesday, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said the swatting was caused by “an online gore-seeking group called ‘Purgatory.’” Wilson added that Purgatory is linked to similar groups he previously warned about earlier this year.

Wilson also said the hoax calls were linked to Purgatory by the Center for Internet Security and Institute for Strategic Dialogue, with a self-proclaimed leader of Purgatory also telling a news outlet that the group was responsible for the USC threat.
