A major setback for Mayor Eric Adams came Monday when a judge blocked the reopening of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office on Rikers Island.

New York State Supreme Court Justice Mary Rosado voided Adams’ executive order, citing concerns it was part of a deal with the Trump administration to dismiss the mayor's criminal indictment.

Rosado pointed to a resignation letter from then-acting U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon , who wrote that Adams’ attorneys "repeatedly urged what amounted to a quid pro quo," suggesting the mayor could assist with the department’s immigration policies “only if the indictment were dismissed.”

The judge previously issued a preliminary injunction in April temporarily blocking the executive order.
