GIRARD The City of Girard has appointed a new interim police chief following the retirement of former chief John Norman.
Girard Mayor Mark Zuppo tells 21 News Captain John Freeman has been selected to fill the role of interim police chief following Norman's retirement. Freeman has worked for the Girard Police Department for about 15 years.
Zuppo said Girard PD has two captains with one having seniority over Freeman, but that captain is retiring next year, so the role was then offered to Freeman, who accepted.
Zuppo added that Freeman was "very interested and highly motivated" to fill the role.
Norman, who had worked with the police department for 41 years and was promoted to chief in 2017, announced his retirement in August of 2025. His retirement officially began Monday, Septembe
