CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The deadly stabbing of a Ukrainian refugee on Charlotte’s light rail in August has put a spotlight on the criminal justice system in Mecklenburg County.

The killing has become a national lightning rod for controversy after surveillance video of the stabbing was released on Friday, Sept. 5. U.S. President Donald Trump and numerous other administration officials responded to the viral killing, blaming Charlotte officials for what happened.

On Truth Social, Trump used the stabbing to campaign for Michael Whatley, a GOP Senate candidate in North Carolina. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy threatened to pull federal funding for public transit in Charlotte. FBI director Kash Patel said his agency was investigating the stabbing.
