When Matt Drinkall got the job as Central Michigan’s head football coach in December, he had a thought — a hope really — about Michigan’s incoming freshman quarterback.

“I’ll be honest with you: I tried to lie to myself when I got hired and we got the schedule,” Drinkall said in a video conference call on Tuesday. “I was like, ‘Oh, well, maybe he’s overhyped, not quite as good as everybody (says).’”

He would be Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 recruit in the country who has started Michigan’s first two games of the season and will do so again on Saturday when Central Michigan comes to Ann Arbor (noon ET, Big Ten Network).
