Court: Trump still owes E. Jean Carroll $83 million
On Sept. 8, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the $83.3 million judgment imposed on Donald Trump by a lower court for defaming former Elle magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll.
Court documents stated, “Trump has failed to identify any grounds that would warrant reconsidering our prior holding on presidential immunity. We also conclude that the district court did not err in any of the challenged rulings and that the jury’s damages awards are fair and reasonable.”
The court rejected Trump’s argument that he was entitled to presidential immunity when he made the statements about Carroll. The appellate court also rejected Trump’s argument the jury’s damages were excessive.
