ASHLAND, Wis. (Northern News Now) - Heavy rain early Tuesday caused a sewer overflow at the 6th Avenue Lift Station in Ashland, releasing an estimated 192,000 gallons.

The spill began around 5:40 a.m. and was contained by city crews by 7 a.m., officials said.

Workers believe the overflow was caused by an equipment failure triggered by storms Monday night into Tuesday morning.

City officials said all necessary steps are being taken to minimize any public health risks and environmental impact.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has been notified and will monitor the situation.
