NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – New data from the New Mexico Department of Health shows suicides in New Mexico increased by 9% last year. Data shows there were 512 suicide deaths in 2024, which is 42 more than the previous year.

White New Mexicans had the highest rate of suicide, followed by Native Americans. The Hispanic suicide rate has increased by 27% over the last decade, according to NMDOH data. "Suicide is preventable, but it requires all of us to act," Claire Miller, lead suicide prevention coordinator for NMDOH said in a release.

September is National Suicide Awareness Month and NMDOH is reminding residents of available resources. The 988 Lifeline is available 24/7 through text, chat, or by calling. It connects anyone seeking support to a trained counselor.
