LAKE LURE, N.C. (WSPA) - The town of Lake Lure is working with FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers to restore Lake Lure, aiming to reopen it by next summer.
The restoration efforts have been ongoing three weeks after Hurricane Helene hit, with crews removing over a million tons of sediment from the lake. The project is crucial for the local economy, which heavily relies on tourism.
"They've removed over a million tons of sediment from the lake if you can imagine," said Carol Pritchett, Mayor of Lake Lure. "It's been devastating to the economy here because most of the tourism here is supported by hotels, lodging, and restaurants," Mayor Pritchett added.
