Two police officers in south-west Melbourne have been charged in connection with the death of a 35-year-old man following his arrest last year. On Thursday, detectives from the Homicide Squad charged a 29-year-old male constable and a 45-year-old male sergeant with negligent manslaughter.
The charges stem from the arrest of Luke Briggs in Hoppers Crossing in July 2024. Briggs died in the hospital eight days after his arrest. A solicitor representing Briggs' family expressed their ongoing grief. "It is plain to see that the family of Luke Briggs have been left utterly distraught by the death of their loved one, Luke, and the subsequent delays in the case," said Sarah Condon from Robinson Gill Lawyer.
Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam addressed the community's concerns regarding the incident. She noted that the case had been under investigation with oversight from the Professional Standards Command. "I understand the news today will be concerning and difficult for many in the community," Steendam said. "However, I want to reassure them that Victoria Police does not shy away from taking action to uphold community trust and confidence in our organization."
Steendam emphasized that the majority of police officers perform their duties with integrity and provide exemplary service. Wayne Gatt, Secretary of the Police Association Victoria, voiced support for the charged officers. "Two of our members have been charged as the result of an on-duty incident that relates to them doing their job," he stated.
Gatt highlighted the challenges faced by police officers, noting that 18,000 other police and Public Safety Officers (PSOs) continue to perform their duties under similar circumstances. "We will be by their side and support them fully as they navigate the difficult path ahead," he added.
The two officers are scheduled to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday.
