Victims' families are demanding stronger police powers to tackle knife crime after a deadly double stabbing but the government refuses to budge.

Chol Achiek, 12, and Dau Akeng, 15, died after being ambushed by masked males armed with machetes and other weapons in Melbourne's outer northwest.

The tragedy on Saturday night has renewed calls for Victoria to introduce Jack's Law, allowing random weapons searches by police at any time in public locations.

Jack's Law was introduced in Queensland after the fatal stabbing of teenager Jack Beasley during a night out on the Gold Coast in 2019.

Similar laws could help police keep the streets safer, says Natalie Gordon, whose brother Ashley was fatally stabbed by a 17-year-old in a home invasion in Melbourne in 2024.
