Starbucks is phasing out its pickup-only store model and has announced the closure of more than 90 of the mobile-focused stores by 2026.
“We found this format to be overly transactional and lacking the warmth and human connection that defines our brand,” CEO Brian Niccol said during a July earnings call.
Starbucks introduced mobile pickup-only stores in 2019 with the first location in New York City, according to CNBC . Pickup-only stores were designed for customers to place orders through the Starbucks app, pick up the order and go.
Customers will still be able to place their order through the app, but locations designed solely for mobile orders will be closing. Mobile orders account for 31% of Starbucks transactions, the company said in a statement to USA Today.
