Two Akron residents, a 43-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man, were sentenced to 24 to 28 years in prison for starving and abusing a child in their care from 2020 to 2024, Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich's office said in a release.
Jason and Angela Smith were found guilty and pleaded no contest to one count of felonious assault (second degree felony); two counts of endangering children (second degree felony); and one count of endangering children (third degree felony).
"Starving an innocent child – one of the most vulnerable members of our community – is deplorable," Kolkovich said in a statement. "I am grateful that he was found and received the critical care he needed before it was too late."
