Penn State University will wind down operations at WPSU before shutting down the public radio station, after a committee on the school’s board of trustees unanimously voted against transferring ownership.
The university said the decision comes after the Penn State Board of Trustees Finance and Investment Committee voted against supporting the transition of WPSU’s assets to WHYY — a Philadelphia-based station — with a $17 million subsidy over five years, according to a university press release.
The decision comes in the wake of more than $1 billion in cuts in federal funding to public media outlets across the county that were included in President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which was signed in July.
