An "abusive" Ayrshire rapist carried out "despicable" crimes against two women over six years.

William Byrne, 45, appeared at the High Court in Glasgow on Thursday (September 11), where he admitted offences including rape, assault to injury and assault to permanent disfigurement.

Byrne carried out his campaign between April 2018 and April 2024 in Ayrshire. He was snared after two victims came forward to police .

Detectives launched an investigation in April 2024 before he was arrested in July 2024. He is due to be sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on October 9.
