Syracuse, N.Y. — Friday was a night of firsts for many Syracuse players.
Perhaps none had more than 17-year-old Demetres Samuel Jr.
The true freshman had yet to play anything other than cornerback for the Orange through two games. When Friday rolled around, that changed.
Samuel caught the first pass, interception and punt return of his young career in a 66-24 win against Colgate .
Syracuse coach Fran Brown has said he wanted Samuel to master the playbook a bit more before taking the field with the offense for the first time.
Samuel did just that, joining Brown and quarterback Steve Angeli for film sessions.
“I’m grateful for everything that he’s doing,” Samuel said after Friday’s win. “He tries to do what’s best for the team, for us to win. I’m glad and I’m grateful that he’s here
