GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The rising popularity of electric bikes and scooters is driving a rise in injuries.
A group of U.S. doctors is urging caution.
The American College of Surgeons reports a surge in injuries across the country, especially among kids and teens. They say the problem is nationwide.
According to the group, more than 20,000 people are hurt while riding e-bikes every year, and about 3,000 end up in the hospital.
Doctors say head injuries are the most common. People have died.
Hospitals are often seeing riders end up in the emergency room who didn’t have a helmet or weren’t wearing the right kind.
Doctors say a stronger helmet with a higher rating is needed for protection when you can go 20, 30, 35 miles per hour on an e-bike or scooter.
