CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Bengals star quarterback Joe Burrow is expected to undergo surgery for Grade 3 turf toe, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

There are three classifications of turf toe injuries, according to the Cleveland Clinic .

Grade 1 is the least severe as the injury only somewhat limits an athlete’s capability.

The soft tissue in the injured toe is typically not torn with Grade 1.

With Grade 2 turf toe, the soft tissue is partially torn, the Cleveland Clinic explained.

Grade 3 turf toe , which is what reports say Burrow suffered on Sunday, is the most severe of the three, per the Cleveland Clinic.

In a Grade 3, the soft tissue in the toe is completely torn. The Cleveland Clinic says the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint could be dislocated in a Grade 3.
