BIDDEFORD, Maine — The University of New England's Biddeford campus offers one of the prettiest views in academia.

Positioned where the Saco River meets Saco Bay, it affords students opportunities to get out on the water early and often.

On a glorious September morning, I joined a handful of students and professors as they loaded a weather station on a boat destined for Ram Island—a small mound of rocks and soil within eyesight of campus.

Just two weeks into his junior year, aquaculture major Tyler Janik stood on the island and held the equipment steady while his professor, Dr. Will Kochtitzky, fiddled with its wires.
