SCRANTON, Pa. — The Lackawanna County Democratic Committee on Monday gave notice they will appeal to the Commonwealth Court for a last-minute halt of a special election for commissioner.
The committee filed the notice of appeal in the county Court of Common Pleas, where a panel of judges last week refused to grant an injunction that would remove candidates from November’s ballot competing to serve former Democratic Commissioner Matt McGloin’s two-year unexpired term. McGloin formally stepped down from the county’s board of commissioners in March.
Seeking the unexpired term are Thom Welby, a Democrat; Chet Merli, a Republican; and independents Michael Cappellini and Ryan Runco. No one else filed by the Monday afternoon deadline to get on the ballot, according to the election office.
