CRESTWOOD, Ky. —

After years of near-misses and collisions, Crestwood has installed a new overhead mast arm barrier to keep low-clearance trucks off the railroad tracks at Highway 146 and Railroad Avenue in Oldham County.

“We have 16 signs total, 4x8-foot signs with a picture of a truck stuck on the tracks and flashing lights. We’ve tried everything we could and nothing seemed to get their attention,” said Mayor Jim Kramer.

Despite the warnings, semis were getting stuck at the crossing more than once a week, officials said, with some struck by trains, including a crash in January 2023.

“It takes half a mile to stop a train. When they come around the corner, even if they stop as hard as they can, they’re going to go through the car, ” Kramer said.
