FORT WRIGHT, Ky. (WXIX) - Dispensaries in Kentucky are still not open despite the legalization of medical cannabis on Jan. 1.

FOX19 NOW spoke to Bluegrass Cannacare representatives about where things stand and when they expect to open.

Governor Andy Beshear said in early September that he expected dispensaries to begin opening this fall.

Bluegrass Cannacare’s Jay Armstrong said they’re expecting something similar. He explained that people may have mistakenly believed legalization meant availability back in January.

He said that before they can open their storefront in Florence, they’ve had to do a lot of paperwork and permitting.

“There’s a lot of red tape to jump through,” he said. “Even opening a business that’s not like a high-risk business or a special-use sort of business.”
