Michael Addison, New Hampshire's only death row inmate, will have a chance to argue his case before the state Supreme Court.

The 45-year-old was sentenced to death in 2008 for fatally shooting Manchester Police Officer Michael Briggs two years earlier as Briggs was trying to arrest him following a string of robberies and a gunfight. But his attorneys argue that the state should not be able to execute him after capital punishment was abolished by New Hampshire lawmakers in 2019. They want his sentence changed to life in prison.

According to the Union Leader , the New Hampshire Supreme Court said Monday that it has accepted Addison's petition and will take another look at the case. His lawyers now have until Oct. 1
