MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Congressman Steve Cohen announced grants for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and St. Jude to support medical research.
UTHSC will receive a grant of $3,010,432 from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for research into diabetes endocrinology.
“A better understanding of diabetes, which is too common in the Mid-South region, will improve outcomes and save lives," Cohen said in a statement.
St. Jude will receive $830,254 from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute into sickle cell disease. In August, St. Jude received a $277,500 grant to study the disease.
“Working to alleviate the trauma and pain associated with sickle cell disease, which disproportionately affects the Black community, will improve lives,"
