Prime Minister Mark Carney says his government is ready to supercharge home construction across the country — and Winnipeg is one of the first cities in line.

On Sunday, Carney announced the launch of Build Canada Homes, a new federal agency with a $13-billion mandate to build affordable housing at scale and speed. Winnipeg will be part of the first wave of projects, which aim to deliver 4,000 factory-built homes across six cities, including Dartmouth, Longueuil, Que., Ottawa, Toronto and Edmonton.

“Canada’s new government is relentlessly focused on bringing down housing costs,” Carney said in Ottawa. “Build Canada Homes will transform the way government works with the private sector. We will build more homes, build sustainably, and build at scale.”
