St. Clair Shores — Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller unveiled the newly enlarged Chapaton Canal in St. Clair Shores on Tuesday, a project she and other officials say will reduce the volume of combined sewer overflows from the canal by 50%.

The canal will normally be empty, but during heavier rains, it will fill with combined stormwater and wastewater from Eastpointe and a large portion of St. Clair Shores. The Macomb County Public Works Office occasionally has to discharge water from the facility into Lake St. Clair after treating it with sodium hypochlorite. Those discharges are called combined sewer overflows.

Miller told reporters and local officials at a press conference Tuesday that she has been working to reduce and eventually eliminate combined sewer overflow
