KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The city of Knoxville said it's looking to the federal government for a grant to help pay for a study on a possible replacement of the Gay Street Bridge.
Mayor Indya Kincannon's administration asked the city council to approve an application for a $1 million Federal Highway Administration grant to start the process of studying options for a possible modern replacement bridge that can bear the weight of vehicles. That proposal was approved on Tuesday, according to a release from the city.
The city would match the grant with $200,000.
The city said structural repairs to stabilize the 127-year-old bridge are mostly complete. Contracted crews will continue to make final repairs throughout the fall. The bridge is on schedule to reopen by Dec. 31.
