TOKYO, Japan — Olmsted Falls native Katie Moon once again proved she’s one of the best in the world.
The American pole vaulter captured her third consecutive world championship title Wednesday in Tokyo after clearing her season-best mark of 4.90 meters (16 feet, ¾ inch).
Moon, a graduate of Ashland University, secured the gold medal in dramatic fashion.
With one attempt left to beat fellow American Sandi Morris, Moon brushed the bar on her way over, but it stayed up.
“It definitely wasn’t an immediate moment of elation, because I wasn’t sure,” Moon said. “But I’d seen it settle enough that I knew it wasn’t coming down. I obviously would’ve loved to have cleared it without touching it, but I’ll take it.”
