NEW ORLEANS —

Two New Orleans City Council members are calling for the legislative auditor to review the city's finances amid a deficit of $100 million.

The call for an audit comes after it was revealed that $70 million of the city's budget deficit accounts for overtime payments to first responders, safety and permits, and the department of public works as well as a $30 million revenue gap. Advertisement

Council members Joe Giarrusso and Helena Moreno are drafting a resolution that would formally ask for the legislative auditor's involvement in the city's financial crisis.

The city is currently implementing a hiring freeze and moving money from the operating budget to the capitol fund.

The City Council will approve the 2026 budget in December.
