The return of federal funding to give extra help to Indigenous students in the classroom is sought by Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board.

Criteria to receive Jordan’s Principle funding has changed, superintendent of education Franca Spadafora and director of education Fil Lettieri told families in a letter.

“ For several years, (Indigenous Services Canada) routinely approved these applications supplementary to school board services,” Spadafora and Lettieri said. “Applications for (educational assistant) support considered an enhancement will no longer be approved.”

The federal department will now only consider requests for help “where the school board explicitly demonstrates that a child’s needs cannot be met through its existing service,” said Spadafora and Lettieri.
